at Colorado Springs
Following a catered breakfast, President Bob Hamblin called for a meeting of the Membership.
He expressed appreciation to those who worked on the rally and presented Bob and Mary Scott, this year’s wagonmasters, with their “Wagonmaster Bars” for a job well done. Next, a check for $2500 was presented to the recipient of this year’s Highway Safety Award.
The Director’s Meeting of June 5 was briefly reviewed. Topics covered were finances, membership issues including adoption of an initiation fee and the Highway Safety program.
President Bob stated the Board endorses continued support for the Highway Safety Program. He outlined in some detail the favorable financial condition of the fund. This occurred during the past year due to some unexpected cash gifts. In addition, the auction this year grossed over $2700 potentially providing approximately $11,000 for the Highway Safety Fund.
He recommended Members consider giving the net proceeds from the auction to the Polio Plus Program of Rotary International. Reasons cited were that we were the first Fellowship to give to Polio Plus in 1985; contributions will be matched by a factor of four; and it will not adversely affect the finances of our Highway Safety Program. Membership action is needed to allow using auction proceeds for a purpose other than the Highway Safety Program.
Moved by Ralph Priem and seconded by George Scantland that the net proceeds from the auction go to the Polio Plus Fund.
Discussion followed. Points raised included:
1. Rotarians already have given through their Club associations.
2. The auction funds should be kept in the Highway Safety Fund.
3. Past members of the Fellowship had to work hard to get the Fund established; we should not to do anything that will have an adverse affect.
4. Proposal does not impinge on existing Fund. It is basically a one-time effort to help the International Rotary project.
5. It is our way of contributing to help eradicate polio from the world.
Question called. Motion to contribute net auction proceeds to Polio Plus carried.
Future Annual Rallies were announced: 2003- Plymouth, CA, May 6-11
